the story in World was awful and not being able to skip cut scenes was painful Now, this is nothing but my personal opinion:

Rise is more in the spirit of previous games. Obviously a lot of people are gonna look back at that and say it's better. It was the first MH game with good graphics and way more modern and fluid gameplay. World made the entire franchise more accessible. I won't farm sets for all the weapon types I play when there is newer and shinier stuff yet to come. The expansion is yet to come out, so basically what made me play World a ton is still missing. Rise meanwhile, with no G Rank and the expansion yet to come out, has a total of 46 large monsters of which 6 aren't even real subspecies or their own thing, so it's more like 40 monsters. World has the whole Iceborne expansion, and as a result has a total of 71 large monsters. Overall, World having more players isn't suprising in the least. Wirebugs should be a bit less important, but at this point it's clear that MH developers struggle with properly balancing new mechanics.

That's also why I hated Raging Brachydios. In Rise we're back to mostly beating a monster that is actually fighting and not lying sideways on the ground. The slingshot and wall banging in World really messed up the balance and pacing of fights. I may feel like in the minority here, but I vastly prefer Rise gameplay over World gameplay.
